In 2010 a peer-reviewed and published study demonstrated that by utilizing compounds known as Zinc Ionophores, coupled with zinc supplementation, the intercellular concentrations of Ionic zinc could be raised from its natural state of “vanishingly small”, by a small amount, but enough to stop viral replication in cell culture. These results have been validated by numerous published studies in the ensuing years.

It's important to note here that the level of ionic zinc in the bloodstream really has very little relationship to the intercellular ionic zinc level. Zinc is an insoluble mineral and has great difficulty crossing the cell membrane which is composed of a lipid bilayer. An ionophore loosely binds to the zinc ion and serves as a transporter across the membrane.

When a virus initially infects an individual, the infection is asymptomatic. Then the virus goes through the Incubation Phase, where the virus takes over the processes of the infected cell to manufacture copies of itself many hundreds or thousands of times. After that, either through a process known as encapsulation or outright rupture of the cell, a storm of viral particles (virions), are released into the bloodstream and go on to infect many cells. At this point the symptoms of the viral disease start to manifest themselves.
